2009 Annual Convention of the Tennessee Psychological Association

November 5, 2009 through November 7, 2009

THE 55TH ANNIVERSARY CONVENTION OF THE TENNESSEE PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION

JOHN B. AVERITT, PH.D.
CONVENTION AND MEETINGS DIRECTORATE

On behalf of the Tennessee Psychological Association Board of Directors, welcome to the 2009 Tennessee State Psychological Convention.  The Convention Staff is here to help you get the most out of this experience.  Please let us know of any needs or questions you have.

The convention committee is very excited to announce some special features of this year’s program.  Len Handler, Ph.D., the program chair for the convention, has an excellent selection of offerings for 2009.  Twenty-nine programs will be offered over the three-day meeting.

This year we will offer programs on the WAIS-IV, WMS-IV, The Spectrum of Narcissism, The Neuropsychology of Consciousness, Adolescent Psychopathology, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Innovative Practice, Families with Disabilities, The Brain and Pain, PTSD, Treatment Resistance, and Primary Care Psychology, to name a few.  One program will be offered by a masters-level practitioner this year to address the unique challenges of masters-level practice.  Also look for national and state experts including Howard Pollio and Vamik D. Volkan just to mention two.  Our own Drs. Jim Brown and Connie Paul will present two programs on ethical practice which is not only a required presentation by the state Board of Examiners for all licensees, but is always very popular with attendees.

In addition to the programs, we will also have the luncheon/business meeting on Friday at noon.  We may have a special guest on that day.  Please note that we have added a charge for the luncheon this year.  The $10.00 fee will not cover the near thirty dollar cost of the luncheon but well help defray the increase in costs of the convention.  You must sign up for the luncheon when you register for the convention.  We will not be able to sell tickets at the door because we must order the meals in advance.  We will have a free reception open to everyone who registers for the convention on Friday evening with professional entertainment and karaoke to follow.  The TPA election results will be announced, student poster sessions will be offered, The Thursday evening Board of Director meeting will be open to everyone, and many other items of interest will be found listed in this brochure.

The convention committee continues to work diligently each year to bring you the best convention possible.  Connie Paul, Ph.D. will process your registration by mail or on line.  You can register by filling out the form in the back of this brochure or by going to www.tpaonline.org and sign up for the festivities.  Dr. Paul will also make the badges we wear, take care of about a thousand other details, and be there to help with many other details at the convention.  Tamela Sadler, Ph.D. will serve as the operational chair at the convention.  She will make all the copies for the continuing education process, direct the proctoring of the programs, serve to welcome you at the registration desk, and much more.  Michael Myszka, Ph.D. is responsible for directing the continuing education program for TPA.  He is also the chair of the committee that approves the programs submitted for the convention.  Both of these jobs are most complex and time consuming.  This convention brochure is produced by Malcolm Spica, Ph.D.  He always brings a creative edge to that challenging task.  Mr. Bill Paul is the convention accountant.  He watches the money during the convention and will assist anyone who needs to register on site.  Tim McConkey, M.Ed. is in charge of marketing for TPA and will direct the exhibitors, marketing, and advertising for the convention.  I also wish to acknowledge Lynn Boatwright, Ph.D., TPA treasurer, who assists the convention committee in managing our budget.  Finally, we appreciate the support of the TPA Board of Directors who provides us with oversight at every turn.

Please remember when you register to select all the programs you wish to attend at that time. Failure to do so may result in small rooms, crowded spaces, and lack of adequate handouts.  This year will be the best program selection to date so please register early.  Also, rooms at the hotel will go fast.  The deadline for hotel rooms is noted in the brochure.  Please make your room reservations early as well.  Remember that some find the meeting room cool and so wear a light sweater or jacket.

The 2009 Tennessee Psychological Association Convention is upon us.  We will see you soon.
